THE BOY WHO LOVED BATMAN - Serio Comics 11
THE BOY WHO LOVED BATMAN: A Memoir by Michael E. Uslan, published by Chronicle Books
The 11th Seriocomics is not a work of graphic literature
It’s instead an extremely inspiring and joyful memoir
Which I just finished
About someone so visionary in comic books
Their life story almost sounds like fiction
If I told you that
It took someone 10 years to convince Hollywood
That adapting Batman into a feature film
Was a good idea
At this point in history
After what’s happened in our culture since then
You might not believe me, would you?
It’s almost inconceivable
That such a project could be considered crazy to others
And be that challenging to realize
But that was the Uslan journey
And there are dozens of visionary moments in this memoir
Joyful, gregarious, and altruistic ones as well
About being family oriented but also hard-working
Positive and resilient but also grounded and humble
Which inspire me tonight
While I’m in San Diego
Visiting an old friend
Planning to attend Comic-Con tomorrow
As one of the guests of that visionary’s son
Who is also joyful, gregarious, and altruistic
And overflowing with visionary ideas
Many of which he’s achieved
With many more to come
I met them both at my day job at the talent agency
Which I’m very fortunate to have had for almost 10 years
Since October 2013
Yet, it was always a Plan B
Much like Uslan’s Plan B to go to law school
And then accept a job as a lawyer at a studio
In order to realize his larger goal of turning Batman into a film
For me, I also started what was a screenplay
And what’s now a graphic novel project
About 10 years ago as well
In December 2013
Along the way, it’s evolved
From a silly action comedy
To a liberal polemic
To now a third thing
Comedic yet serious
That just tries to express as many POVs as it can to help its readers figure out theirs
Many people have thought it’s a crazy idea
To tell a serious yet comedic story about guns in our country
Or have told me to try a different path
Or that it’s pathetic to keep talking about my vision
But reading the Uslan story
Over and over there were examples
That help me continue to believe in keeping going
Here are some examples…
